Objective: Students will work collaboratively to present their understanding of a text in a graphic format.
Strategies: collaborative work, project
Materials:
- butcher or large construction paper (for each group)
- assignment sheet (for each group)
- relevant text(s) (for each student)
- markers
- Place desks in groups before the first class period.
- Place a sheet of butcher/construction paper and a set of instructions at each table.
- Students should know ahead of time which group they will be in, or groups can be displayed as the students walk in so they know where to sit.( E.g. names of group members are placed at each table- students find their name and sit at the appropriate table.) Groups are pre-arranged to mix stronger and struggling students together (heterogeneous grouping of skill level).
- Place markers at the front of the classroom, or other easily-accessible location.
- Students should look over the assignment before class begins.
- When class begins, briefly explain assignment directions and clarify any questions as needed.
- Students have almost the entire class period to work. Leave about 10-15 minutes (depending on the number of groups) for presentations at the end of class. Be circling as the groups work and point struggling groups in the right direction.
- Students should clean up all markers and craft supplies before presentations.
- Allow each group to informally present all or just the most important aspects of their poster to the class, as time allows.
- When appropriate/time allows, place clean butcher/construction paper (and clean assignment sheet, if needed) at each group table for the next class.
